Shopping on the agenda at Ramona Woman’s Club Luncheon and Fashion Show

The theme of this year’s Ramona Woman’s Club Luncheon and Fashion Show is Spring Fiesta.

The highlight of the annual event on Thursday, April 11 will be fashions, purses and jewelry by Glamour Girlz Boutique of El Cajon that will be modeled by Woman’s Club members.

Glamour Girlz owner Peggy Harris said the clothes are comfortable and fun but dressy with some sparkle.

“They have a high-end look but I get wholesale prices so the prices are reasonable,” Harris said. “They have a wow factor when the models walk in them.”

Harris has owned her clothing business for 40 years, including 25 years at her current location at 124 E. Main St. El Cajon. In that time she has held fashion show fundraisers and vendor sales for a variety of organizations including the Soroptimist International nonprofit that supports women and girls, and St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, which provides programs for adults with disabilities.

A percentage of the sales are given back to the host organization, Harris said.

Ramona High School culinary students will prepare Mexican-themed dishes for the luncheon portion of the fundraiser.

Orlando Perez, culinary arts instructor, said preparing and serving food for the event teaches students practical skills. It also promotes the program when attendees at community events see the professional level of services the students provide.

“It teaches students to be productive members of society and to give back to the community,” he said. “And they can develop relationships with potential employers.”

The menu will include chicken and ground beef enchiladas, chicken and marinated beef quesadillas, Mexican rice, Southwestern bean salad, 16-bean soup, and for dessert, fruit salad, flan, churros and orchata.

Betty Shaw, a member of the Ramona Woman’s Club Ways and Means Committee, said everybody has a good time at the fashion show and the food is excellent.

“We’re really excited and we’re getting it going,” Shaw said. “It’s been coming along really well.”

Ramona Woman’s Club President Jill McKenzie said the club has been hosting the annual Luncheon and Fashion Show for years to raise money for student scholarships and community nonprofits.

Three separate scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to Ramona graduating students this year, McKenzie said. The recipients will be announced at the May 23 Ramona High Awards Night, she said.

An additional $300 will be donated to three nonprofits for a total of $900 in community contributions, McKenzie said. The nonprofit recipients will be announced at the Ramona Woman’s Club’s May 2 general meeting.

“That’s what we spend the whole year fundraising for,” she said.

In addition to selling $30-per-person tickets to the Luncheon and Fashion Show, the club will be raising money with opportunity drawing gift baskets and gift certificates. Guests can purchase $1 tickets to take a chance on winning one of 31 gift baskets or gift cards, McKenzie said.

The Luncheon and Fashion Show is set for 11 a.m. at the clubhouse, 524 Main St. The club’s regular meetings are held at 12:30 p.m. the second Monday of the month from September through June at the clubhouse.
