Envied Vintage Clothing is back in a new location

Darien Collins has a wardrobe as unique as the items he sells in his store.

A blue-and-green hoodie stuck out from under a Chicago White Sox jacket. The look was paired with a purple Air Jordan hat on top of his green hair. The vintage finds represent the ones he sells in his store, Envied Vintage Clothing, Etc.

Collins’ store is tucked in at 800 Isabel Bloom Way, in the red brick building adjacent to the Isabel Bloom showroom. He reopened the store in mid-October after closing earlier this year for a tragic, and unexpected, reason.

The store first opened in March in the first floor of the building at 324 Main St. After successfully running an Etsy shop where he sold his vintage finds, Collins decided to try his hand at opening his own place.

After a year-and-a-half, he was ready. But, things took a turn on May 28. After a little more than two months as a first-time business owner, Collins received word the west wall of the building collapsed.

“At first I didn’t think it was real. I thought it was a joke at first,” he said. “Then my grandma called me to tell me and I (realized), ‘Oh wow. She was being serious.’”

Neither business owners nor residents were allowed to go back inside The Davenport and collect their belongings. This was especially difficult for Collins, who spent years searching for vintage inventory to line his shelves.

But, Collins set out to get right back into the business and began resourcing and building back his inventory.

“I wasn’t nearly as good at getting (inventory) as I am now, obviously,” he said, gesturing to the full store in front of him. “This took me about three months to get.”

Deciding to come back was a no-brainer, he said. The new location is a bit outside of downtown, but he won’t be gone long. Once construction is complete on the Bucktown building on 2nd Street, the owners are letting him move into the first floor.

Customers can expect to see everything from vintage hats, bags and accessories to art, records and, of course, vintage T-shirts. Collins has sizes for everyone from children to adults, with special attention to menswear.

Envied will be open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
